Amazon announced on Friday that it is investing an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, doubling its total investment to $8 billion over the last 14 months. The artificial intelligence startup based in San Francisco focuses on AI safety and research.

Amazon’s move comes as tech giants like Microsoft and Google race to develop generative AI.

Anthropic plans to use the funding to enhance its AI assistant Claude and develop machine learning hardware.

The investment is also tied to Amazon’s cloud platform, where Anthropic has committed $4 billion over five years.

Despite regulatory scrutiny, including probes by the FTC and UK officials, Amazon’s push signals the ongoing AI arms race in tech.
