OpenAI launched a more affordable GPT-4o mini aimed at broadening the accessibility of its popular chatbot.

The company described the new release as the most capable and cost-effective small-scale model to date. OpenAI intends to incorporate capabilities for image, video, and audio functionalities in subsequent updates.

Derived from GPT-4o, OpenAI’s most advanced model to date, the lite model marks a significant step in the company’s pursuit of multimodal AI capabilities.

It also positions OpenAI against Anthropic and Google, both of whom have already introduced cheaper variants of their sophisticated AI models.

GPT-4o mini is accessible to free users of ChatGPT, as well as ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, with availability for ChatGPT Enterprise users beginning next week.
