Uber tested the program in India and plans to add more digital tasks over time
Uber will soon let its US drivers and couriers earn money even when they’re not transporting passengers or food.
Yesterday, the company announced a new pilot program at its Only on Uber 2025 conference in Washington, DC, which will allow US drivers who opt in to complete small online tasks through its app for money.
Examples include uploading photos to train AI models or recording short audio clips in different accents or languages.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the idea came from extensive driver feedback, collected through over 60 “Crew sessions.”
Pay for each task will depend upon its complexity and time required, and drivers can preview payment before accepting. The initiative resembles microtask platforms like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk or Upwork.
The move supports Uber’s growing AI Solutions division, which provides data labeling services to train artificial intelligence models—similar to what Scale AI offers.
Scale AI, a major player in this space, recently received over $14 billion in investment from Meta and is valued at about $29 billion.
