A Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore experienced “sudden extreme turbulence,” likely causing the death of a 73-year-old British passenger and critically injuring at least 30 others.

The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was diverted to Bangkok, where it landed safely.

Turbulence struck about 10 hours into the flight, causing severe cabin chaos, including pillows, plates and oxygen masks dropping down, resulting in injuries.

It was the first fatal incident for Singapore Airlines in nearly 25 years. The US National Transportation Safety Board is sending representatives to assist with the investigation.
