Compared to last year, fake egg sales have gone up by 20%

For the third year in a row, Easter egg prices are cracking wallets, with the average wholesale cost hitting $3.13 per dozen—up from $3.08 last week, according to USDA data.

Last month, a dozen eggs retailed at a record $6.23, prompting people to look for cheaper alternatives and use fake plastic eggs, potatoes and even marshmallows.

Retailers have also seen a rise in demand for budget-friendly alternatives. Compared to last year, fake egg sales have gone up by 20%.

A Ziff Davis survey found that nearly 49% of Americans say rising prices have changed how they celebrate.
