Lego wants to use renewable resin for its iconic plastic bricks|Joe Shlabotnik|CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

Amid a global toy sales decline, Lego reported a 26% increase in profit for the first half of the year to $1.2 billion; sales to consumers grew 14%. But this was not the only announcement the toymaker made yesterday.

Lego said that by 2032, all its products will be made of recyclable and renewable materials.

The Danish toymaker uses virgin plastics made from crude oil for its signature bricks. It plans to use renewable resin, which is more expensive than the plastic it currently uses.

Lego said that this year, nearly 22% of the materials used for its products came from recycled sources, up from 12% in 2023.

The company will reportedly pay 70% more for certified renewable resin, but it assures that these prices will not be passed on to the consumer.

Global toy sales
The Danish company’s profit comes as rival toymakers Hasbro and Mattel have reported lower sales for the first half of the year.

The success can be attributed to collaborations with the popular Fortnite video game and classic movie-themed sets of Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, and DC characters.
