We have “two years left to save the world,” said a UN official, Simon Stiell, in London this week.
Stiell, the former climate minister of the island nation of Grenada, urged the world leaders to meet the 2025 Paris Agreement deadline to share their national climate targets to curb emissions.
He highlighted crop failures and health issues exacerbated by climate change. He also asked the international leaders for measures like carbon pricing to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels and cautioned against the upcoming elections downplaying climate issues.
Stiell emphasized that countries need stronger pre-2030 climate targets and called for a “new deal” on climate finance to be negotiated at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29) taking place in Azerbaijan in November.
