Greece wildfires threaten Athens with 80-foot blazes

Massive wildfires have broken out near Athens, Greece, causing widespread destruction, multiple evacuations, and at least one death. The fires are challenging to control due to strong winds and dry conditions from repeated heat waves.

The wildfires are raging during Greece’s peak tourism season, burning homes and businesses, with flames reaching up to 25 meters (80 feet) high.

Over 700 firefighters are battling the blaze, while 18 people have been reported injured, mostly from smoke inhalation.

France, Italy, and several other countries are providing assistance.

The wildfire highlights the increasing danger posed by climate change, with Greece experiencing its hottest June and July on record. Authorities have warned of the potential for more wildfires in the coming days due to adverse weather conditions.
