As Los Angeles firefighters battle wildfires that have claimed at least 24 lives and burned over 40,000 acres, they also brace for more Santa Ana winds that fueled the fires last week.

The Eaton and Palisades Fires remain major threats, with containment at 27% and 11%, respectively, as of writing this report.

Officials warn that the gusty, dry winds are forecast to continue till Wednesday, increasing the threat of fire spread.

Over 12,000 structures, including homes, businesses and places of worship, have been destroyed. Wind gusts of 30 to 75 mph and low humidity keep fire risks high. Red flag warnings remain through Wednesday.

More than 153,000 residents have evacuated, with 166,000 under warnings, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

Due to damaged water systems, officials have issued “do not drink” orders for several areas. Air quality remains hazardous, prompting advisories to stay indoors.

Investigators are looking into the possible cause of the fires.
