Currently, Colorado, Louisiana and Utah accept cryptocurrency for state payments

Detroiters will have the option to pay taxes and city fees using cryptocurrency next year, making the city the largest in the US to do so. The rollout date isn’t confirmed yet.

Payments will be handled securely through PayPal, aiming to boost accessibility for unbanked residents and modernize the city’s payment systems.

With the move, Detroit joins smaller municipalities such as Williston, North Dakota, and Miami Lakes in Florida that accept cryptocurrency to pay for services like utility bills and permits.

Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the city’s commitment to embracing technology and exploring blockchain applications for civic use.

Currently, Colorado, Louisiana and Utah accept cryptocurrency for state payments. Colorado was the first to adopt crypto for state taxes in September 2022.
