The Trump administration had pulled $400 million in federal funding for Columbia University in March|Jorge Royan|CC BY-SA 3.0
Columbia University’s board of trustees is discussing a possible deal with the Trump administration to restore some of the $400 million in federal funding cut in March, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The administration had pulled the funding, accusing Columbia of failing to protect Jewish students during pro-Palestinian campus protests.
In May, a federal investigation found the university violated students’ civil rights and issued a formal notice of violation.
Talks now exclude a consent decree—which would place the school under a judge’s supervision—but may include a federal monitor with limited oversight.
Columbia earlier agreed to restrict masks, empower campus police, and assign a senior vice provost over key departments of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies. Still, its funding remains frozen.
