The Trump administration has reportedly frozen $1 billion in federal funding to Cornell and $790 million to Northwestern universities as part of a sweeping probe into alleged civil rights violations at elite US universities.

The crackdown impacts grants and contracts from the departments of defense, agriculture, education, and human services (HHS).

Cornell stated it has “received more than 75 stop work orders” from the defense department affecting national defense, cybersecurity and health research projects.

Northwestern says it hasn’t received any official notification.

President Donald Trump has pledged to address antisemitism on campuses and unfair DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) programs. Around 60 institutions are under investigation.

Over $10 billion in federal funding is frozen or under review at top-tier schools, including Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Brown and UPenn.
