Disney is opening a new ride today, the “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure,” which will replace the popular Splash Mountain ride that has been a long-standing attraction since 1989 in Disneyland and other parks.
The new ride is themed after the popular Princess and the Frog film, making it the park’s first ride based on a Black character.
Splash Mountain has been controversial due to its association with the Song of the South movie, which has been criticized for depicting Black stereotypes. The new theme allows Disney to upgrade ride elements, introduce new merchandise, and offer themed food and drinks.
The transformation is part of Disney’s $60 billion investment in its parks, aimed at keeping attractions relevant and improving guest experiences.
Disney’s parks have become a significant profit driver, with the experiences segment accounting for 36% of total revenue and 70% of operating income in 2023. CEO Bob Iger emphasized the high RIO in parks, driving further investment in the past year.
The entertainment giant also has plans to create land based on films like Avatar, Coco and Encanto.
