Hollywood giants skip Cannes 2026

The fashion and motion picture-filled 79th Cannes Film Festival begins today. However, major Hollywood studios, directors, and actors are skipping the event this year.

High-profile directors like Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, and Alejandro G. Inarritu would be absent despite having big releases scheduled for this year.

Nolan’s The Odyssey and Spielberg’s Disclosure Day are set to hit theaters this summer. Some of the movies are still in production, so the studios are avoiding spending millions on Cannes promotions.

These absences leave the spotlight to international auteurs. The French film festival also serves as a platform for studios to shop around for movies and scripts. It also helps discover new artists.

Industry insiders say the movie business is slowly recovering, with US box office earnings rising more than 20% this year thanks to successful releases and growing interest from younger audiences.
