The much-awaited comedic superhero combo, Deadpool & Wolverine, dominated the domestic box office this past weekend, generating an estimated $205 million in ticket sales. It is the best-ever opening weekend for an R-rated movie.

The third installment in the Deadpool franchise also made an estimated $233.3 million overseas. This film’s success comes when Hollywood box office sales are down 17% this year. It also hints at audiences’ interest in follow-up stories.

Actor Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Deadpool, teaming up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to fight a common enemy.

This pairing has been highly anticipated since Disney discussed plans to integrate them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after its 2009 and 2019 acquisitions of Marvel Studios and 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets, which owned rights to these characters.
