Disney is setting up a new department called Office of Technology Enablement to oversee the integration of evolving technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) across its film, TV and theme park divisions, reports Reuters.
It will be led by the studio’s CTO, Jamie Voris, who developed Disney’s app for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. The unit is expected to expand to about 100 employees. It aims to leverage AI, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) for innovative consumer experiences.
As competition in the AR/VR space heats up—with Meta leading and rivals like Sony, Apple, and ByteDance gaining ground—Disney is quietly building a team to bring these immersive experiences to its theme parks and into consumers’ homes.
According to data from market research firm IDC, around 1.7 million AR/VR headsets have been sold so far this year.
