Pixar Studios’ Inside Out 2 broke records over the weekend, grossing an estimated $155 million domestically, dethroning Dune: Part Two as the holder of this year’s top box office opening weekend.

The movie raked in $295 million globally.

It is also the second-highest domestic opening for an animated film, following Incredibles 2 in 2018.

The sequel has received positive reviews, with a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” rating on CinemaScore.

The success is a much-needed win for Pixar, which has faced a series of box office challenges since the pandemic. Recent original films like Turning Red, Luca and Soul failed to resonate as broadly as older Pixar classics like Toy Story.

Releases like Lightyear and Elemental also underperformed at the box office.

Pixar’s recent strategy shift focuses more on sequels and spinoffs than original concepts.
