Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus Megalopolis flopped at the weekend box-office debut, collecting only $4 million from 1,854 North American theaters, despite a $136 million budget.
The film is The Godfather director Coppola’s first release in 13 years. It ranked sixth at the domestic box office. Its limited release also contributes to the low ticket sales. Some analysts believe it may gain long-term interest from movie enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, Universal and DreamWorks’ animated film The Wild Robot debuted at the top of the box office, earning $35 million from 3,962 theaters, exceeding expectations.
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continues to perform well, earning $16 million this past weekend. Since its release this month, it has grossed $250 million domestically and $373.3 million globally.
