Disney’s Moana 2 made massive waves in domestic ticket sales, raking in $221 million over five days, and smashed the Thanksgiving box office record. It surpassed 2019’s Frozen II ($125 million) and became the biggest five-day debut in history.
Globally, the Polynesian animation adventure has earned $386.3 million.
Apart from its storyline, the movie’s success was also aided by the sudden popularity of the original 2016 Moana film, which recently became the most streamed US movie in 2023.
Moana 2 isn’t the only movie that made people go to the theaters. Wicked made $117.5 million domestically over five days, becoming the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation. Gladiator II pulled in $262.4 million in North America.
Together, these blockbusters drove a historic $422 million Thanksgiving box office, smashing the previous $315 million record from 2018.
