Originally planned as a TV show, Moana 2—the animated sequel to the 2016 namesake hit—raked in over $1 billion globally since its Thanksgiving debut eight weekends ago.

The movie brought in $445 million domestically and $567 million globally, making it Disney’s third $1 billion release in 2024, alongside Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Despite mixed reviews, strong word-of-mouth and theatrical success reaffirmed the decision to transition the sequel from Disney+ streaming to theaters.

The first Moana grossed $680 million through its theater run but rose in sudden popularity in 2023. It became the most-streamed US movie that year.

With a live-action remake of the first film set for 2026, Moana 3 is likely on the horizon.
