The viral short-form animation series Skibidi Toilet, which depicts a dystopian world where toilets with human heads fight humanoid TV robots, may soon be a movie.
The animated internet sensation caught the attention of Transformers director Michael Bay and former Paramount Pictures President Adam Goodman, who told Variety they are “absolutely in talks right now” of adapting Skibidi Toilet IP into film or a TV show.
The YouTube Shorts series created by 25-year-old Alexey Gerasimov last year is a hit among Gen Alpha, born between the early 2010s and 2020s.
Last year alone, the 76-episode series amassed over 65 billion views on YouTube.
The series is unique because it is told entirely through short-form videos and allows fans to create spin-off series and Roblox games, attracting millions of users. This openness is unlike traditional IPs, which often restrict such activity.
Apart from the movie and TV presence, the series aims to create merchandise, including toys and apparel—akin to Marvel and DC movies.
Skibidi’s success highlights the power of social media and digital platforms. Other such online series getting their Hollywood debuts are:
-
Ryan’s World is a child toys review channel whose movie hits theaters soon.
-
The toddler cartoon series CoComelon is reportedly getting a film version.
Such series are seen as fresh and original ideas in an industry dominated by reboots, giving Gen Alpha something they can call their own.
