America’s 400 richest people are wealthier than ever, with their combined net worth jumping $1.2 trillion to $6.6 trillion this year. However, their charity has not kept pace, according to Forbes.

The group, which consists of billionaires who are worth at least $3.8 billion each, has donated $319 billion over their lifetimes. This is only 4.6% of their total wealth, down from 5% last year.

Nearly three-quarters of the billionaires have given away less than 5% of their fortunes, and 40% have donated under 1%. It signifies that most of the country’s top billionaires have donated just a small fraction of their wealth.

Notably, only 11 billionaires have given away at least 20% of their wealth, earning the highest Forbes’ philanthropy score of 5.

Top givers include Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda, Jeff Bezos’s ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, George Soros, and Reed Hastings.

Buffett leads in total dollars donated with over $64.8 billion, while Soros remains the most generous relative to his net worth, having given away over 75% of his fortune.

Despite major gifts supporting causes from education to social justice, overall generosity among the ultra-rich has declined.
