Around 57 million Americans aged 50+ are gaming regularly
Gaming isn’t just for the young anymore: older adults now make up nearly one-third of US gamers, with 57 million Americans aged 50+ playing regularly, according to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).
Even in their 80s, over a third are still logging in.
From Call of Duty to hunting simulators and air-combat games like Metalstorm, many seniors are swapping traditional hobbies like knitting and bridge for gaming consoles. Some, including popular streamers like GrndpaGaming and TacticalGramma, have even built large followings on Twitch and YouTube.
Their top reasons to play include mental acuity, relaxation, and good old-fashioned fun. Some studies suggest certain games may help cognitive function. Additionally, multiplayer modes often make the boomer and silent generation familiar with Gen Z lingo.
Interestingly, more Boomer women (52%) play video games than Boomer men (46%).
Overall, ESA data shows that approximately 205.1 million Americans play video games regularly.
