Despite strong sales driven by games like ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder,’ Nintendo’s game pipeline seems thin for 2024|Giphy

Dispelling years of speculation and to keep profits up, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said it will officially announce the successor of its popular Switch console by March 2025.

The Japanese gaming giant anticipates a profit decline due to dwindling sales of its aging console. It sold 15.7 million units of Switch in the year ending in March 2024.

Switch is the third-most-popular gaming console in history and has sold more than 141 million units. It was announced in 2015; the handheld arrived in 2017.

For the fiscal year ending March 2025, the company forecasts a drop in sales, expecting to sell 13.5 million units.

CEO Furukawa’s announcement follows Nintendo’s fiscal fourth-quarter results, which exceeded its sales forecast for the Switch, surpassing expectations with 1.7 trillion yen in sales, marking a 4.4% increase.

Despite strong sales, driven by games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Nintendo faces challenges with a thin games pipeline for the current year.
