A devastating fire tore through a New Year’s Eve celebration at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, killing about 40 people and injuring nearly 115 others, according to the police.

Officials said around 50 people suffered critical burns, forcing Switzerland to seek help from neighboring countries, including France, Italy, and Germany. Authorities also reported several people missing.

The blaze erupted at Le Constellation bar, located in one of Switzerland’s most exclusive Alpine destinations.

Officials said a dangerous “flashover” triggered an explosion, causing flames to spread rapidly and leaving little time for escape. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as smoke filled the bar and people panicked while trying to escape.

Authorities ruled out terrorism and began a formal investigation into the cause of the fire and a possible explosion. Investigators cautioned that determining the exact cause will take time.
