The Biden administration intensified its pressure on Israel this week to improve the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
In a letter to Israeli officials, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that the US might resort to punitive measures, potentially suspending military aid if humanitarian assistance is not improved within 30 days. The US also asked Israel to improve aid truck crossings.
They demanded that Israel take urgent steps to ensure civilians have access to food, medicine, and other necessities, attributing the worsening situation to actions by the Israeli government and instability in Gaza.
It highlights specific demands, such as allowing at least 350 aid trucks daily into Gaza, establishing humanitarian pauses for aid delivery, and ensuring the region’s isolation ends.
The US is Israel’s largest military supporter, providing $3.8 billion annually. The letter signifies rising tensions amid ongoing military operations against Hamas.
