The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) sought arrest warrants on Monday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, among others, for war crimes against humanity in the ongoing war in Gaza that started with Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
Netanyahu and other officials condemned the warrants against Israeli leaders, labeling it antisemitic and “a disgrace.”
America (not an ICC member) also opposed the action against Israel. President Joe Biden criticized the prosecutor and reaffirmed Israel’s right to self-defense. He called the move to arrest Israeli heads “outrageous” and said that there is “no equivalence” between Israel and Hamas.
Meanwhile, France reiterated its backing for the ICC for alleged war crimes, emphasizing the international court’s vital role in protecting human rights.
