He and his wife, Cilia Flores, also face cocaine importation and illegal weapons charges. The Maduros are expected to plead not guilty to the charges.

The US government aims to seize assets linked to the alleged crimes.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s high court ruled Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will serve as interim president, calling Maduro’s absence temporary.
