President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen

President Donald Trump announced that the US will delay the planned 50% tariff on imports from the European Union two days after he threatened that fresh duties would commence from June 1.

The levies have now been postponed to July 9 to buy time for negotiations with the bloc.

Trump said the decision followed a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The proposed tariffs—targeting over $600 billion in goods—had unsettled global markets amid fears of a renewed trade war.

Earlier this year, Trump reduced existing tariffs on the EU from 20% to 10% for 90 days beginning April 9. However, last week, he warned of a steep 50% increase if talks fail.

Von der Leyen responded on X, saying the EU is “ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.”

The extension gives both sides just over a month to find common ground and avoid a trade clash.
