President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest in the coming weeks to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
The agreement followed a phone call between the two leaders, which Trump called very productive on Truth Social.
High-level advisers, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will first meet next week to prepare for the in-person summit.
Trump indicated the US is putting off sending Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv, citing their strategic importance for American defense.
He said he briefly discussed the missiles with Putin, who opposed the idea, warning that supplying them would damage US-Russia relations without changing the battlefield.
Trump emphasized his goal is to save lives and help Europe while coordinating separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is in Washington meeting defense firms about advanced weapons.
The discussion also touches on US restrictions on long-range strikes inside Russia and ongoing intelligence sharing with Kyiv.
