An advertisement commissioned by the province of Ontario soured relations with the US over the weekend, prompting President Donald Trump to halt trade talks and impose an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods.

What happened?
Ontario aired an ad that featured former US President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 speech, in which he says tariffs “hurt every American.”

Trump has accused Canada of “fraudulently” using the clip to influence US courts and mislead the public. He then announced the suspension of trade negotiations.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who said he would spend $75 million to run the ad in the US, said it was meant to start a conversation. He added that the advertisement would be paused on Monday.

However, the advertisement became an eyesore for Trump as it aired during the Friday night World Series game, which the Toronto Blue Jays won, 11-4 over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

As a result, Trump announced a new 10% tariff on Canada.

Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney are set to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit this week. When asked about Trump’s new tariff, Carney said Canada was ready to resume trade talks but is also diversifying ties with ASEAN nations.

The dispute comes just ahead of Supreme Court hearings in early November that will determine whether Trump had the legal authority to impose broad tariffs.
