President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that the US has “captured” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and that they are “flown out of the Country.”
Trump’s claim came following explosions across the capital city of Caracas on Saturday morning, which he confirmed were a “large scale” strike against the South American nation.
Maduro had declared a national emergency and denounced the US attack as an attempt to take his country’s oil and other resources.
Situations remain tense in the region. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has demanded “immediate proof of life” of the leader and the First Lady, whose whereabouts remain unknown. The military has been deployed across the country.
US-Venezuela relations have become erratic over the past few months, with American forces attacking several vessels and capturing oil tankers that they say are linked to drug smuggling or subject to sanctions.
