Top US and Chinese negotiators expressed optimism after weekend trade talks in Malaysia, calling the discussions constructive ahead of a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both sides now have a “successful framework” for the leaders to discuss on Thursday.

Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang said they reached a “preliminary consensus” on key issues, including tariffs, export controls, fentanyl trade, and agricultural purchases.

Bessent added that the US and China are likely to extend their current trade truce, which expires on November 10.

The talks aimed to ease tensions after months of escalating trade measures and blacklist expansions.

The upcoming Trump-Xi meeting will be their first in-person session since Trump began his second term.
