The THAAD system is designed to intercept short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles
The Pentagon announced that the US is deploying an advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) along with around 100 American troops to Israel as tensions rise in the Middle East.
President Joe Biden ordered the move following Iran’s launch of around 200 missiles at Israel on October 1.
The THAAD system, designed to intercept short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, will enhance the protection of Israeli cities, military bases and critical infrastructure from future ballistic missile attacks from Iran.
The US has already provided over 50,000 tons of military supplies since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2024.
US officials believe Israel will soon attack Iran, which could lead to a broader conflict affecting the global economy. President Biden emphasized that any Israeli retaliation should be proportional.
