President Joe Biden has approved Ukraine’s use of the ATACMS, a powerful long-range missile, for targeted strikes inside Russia. The US hesitated for months, fearing escalation, before granting the request.

The decision comes after Russia launched a drone and missile strike against Ukraine and follows the news of North Korea’s deployment of 10,000 troops to support Russia’s war effort in Kursk, a strategic area near Ukraine.

Although the ATACMS can strike targets up to 100 km away, its impact may be limited due to a small supply. In contrast, Ukraine has been using cheaper, domestically-made drones to penetrate deeper into Russian territory.

The Biden administration aims to deter further North Korean involvement and strengthen Ukraine’s defenses. While the missile system offers tactical advantages, concerns remain about provoking Russian retaliation.

The move comes two months before Donald Trump’s presidency. Trump has indicated he plans to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
