President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House on Friday|@ZelenskyyUa|X
President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House yesterday, during which Trump proposed that Russia and Ukraine halt fighting at their current positions to begin peace talks.
Zelensky accepted the plan as a starting point but stressed that real progress depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he accused of not wanting peace.
Earlier this week, Trump seemed receptive to providing long-range missiles to Ukraine; however, his stance changed after a call with Putin, who warned that sending such weapons to Kyiv would harm US-Russia relations.
Trump said he preferred peace over arming Ukraine, while Zelensky suggested that merely discussing such weapons increased pressure on Putin, which he viewed as vital to pushing Russia toward negotiations.
Trump and Putin are set to meet in Hungary in the coming weeks.
