France has entered another political crisis after lawmakers ousted Prime Minister Francois Bayrou in a no-confidence vote supported by 364 deputies.
Bayrou, a centrist ally of President Emmanuel Macron, resigned after just nine months in the position.
The defeat forces Macron to name a new prime minister who must navigate a deeply divided parliament and secure agreement on next year’s budget by December.
The turmoil comes as France’s public debt has ballooned to $3.6 trillion—114% of its economy—raising borrowing costs higher than Greece’s and alarming global investors.
Bayrou had warned of a financial “hemorrhage” before his downfall.
Macron faces growing protests against spending cuts, mounting pressure from populist parties, and few clear options to stabilize both France’s politics and its finances.
