Diplomatic efforts led by the US and France are progressing towards a cease-fire between Israel and the Lebanese paramilitary group, as the Israeli cabinet will vote on the agreement today.
The deal is expected to pass. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approved the plan “in principle,” per CNN.
The proposal aims to achieve 60 days of truce and involves the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon and an end to the Hezbollah presence in the area.
A five-nation committee, headed by the US, will monitor compliance with the deal terms.
Violence has intensified despite the cease-fire talks. Israeli airstrikes in Beirut killed 31 people on Monday, while Hezbollah launched 250 rockets into Israel over the weekend.
The conflict, tied to the broader Gaza war, has caused over 3,750 deaths in Lebanon over the past year, with over a million displaced.
