Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered powerful strikes in Gaza on Tuesday after Israeli forces were attacked in Rafah, killing one soldier.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Hamas militants launched anti-tank missiles and sniper fire.
Hamas denied involvement, accusing Israel of breaching the ceasefire and reporting over 30 Palestinian deaths in the Israeli airstrikes.
The escalation puts President Donald Trump’s landmark peace deal at risk.
The US had recently deployed senior officials and set up a command center in Israel to monitor the ceasefire. Trump, traveling in Asia, said Israel had the right to defend itself but claimed the truce wasn’t in danger.
Following Netanyahu’s announcement, Hamas postponed the return of a deceased Israeli hostage, warning that further strikes would obstruct recovery efforts.
