A top Hezbollah commander, Ibrahim Akil, and 10 other Hezbollah operatives were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Lebanon’s capital Beirut on Friday.
According to Lebanon, the airstrike killed at least 14 and wounded several others.
The US had sanctioned Akil, and he was designated a terrorist in 2019 for his involvement in the 1983 terrorist attack at the US Embassy in Beirut and the US Marine Corps barracks that killed over 300 people.
The recent attack comes after pagers and walkie-talkies exploded in Lebanon. Akil’s death is seen as a further escalation that can lead to a wider war in the region.
