Authorities open investigation into sinking of Bayesian

Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter probe into the sinking of British tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s $40 million luxury yacht Bayesian, off the coast of Sicily, killing seven people, including Lynch and his teenage daughter.

The superyacht’s captain and 14 others survived.

Authorities are examining why the 184-foot yacht sank so quickly when nearby vessels remained afloat. The new investigation aims to identify the cause and potential suspects, including the captain, crew, or boat makers.

Initial reports suggested that an extreme weather event—a waterspout, a type of tornado—may have capsized the yacht.

Efforts continue to locate the yacht and its black box, with wreckage submerged 160 feet deep, complicating the search.
