Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi clinched victory in Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, paving the way for his third consecutive term.

Out of 543 seats, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance together secured 290 seats, while the opposition, including the Indian National Congress (INC), outperformed expectations with 235 seats.

The BJP secured 238 seats—down from its 303-seat victory in 2019. Modi’s Hindu nationalist party has been in power since 2014. It has lost its outright majority.

The elections, spanning six weeks, witnessed over 1 billion voters, marking the world’s largest democratic exercise.
