Police have captured the suspect in a mass shooting at Northside Hospital in midtown Atlanta that killed one person and injured four.
A 39-year-old woman, Darin Scierbaum, was dead at the scene. The injured were also women, ages 25, 39, 56 and 71.
The shooting unfolded just after 12.30 PM in a waiting room on the 11th floor, on Wednesday.
Motive uncertain
The gunman has been identified as 24-year-old Deion Patterson—a former member of the US Coast Guard.
He was visiting the hospital for an appointment, accompanied by his mother. He began firing shortly after arrival. The shooting lasted about two minutes.
Patterson fled to a Shell gas station and took a pickup truck that had been left running and unattended.
“Why he did what he did, all of that is still under investigation,” said Atlanta police deputy chief Charles Hampton Jr.
