The Supreme Court is likely to uphold the federal law restricting gun possession for individuals with a domestic violence restraining order.
Justices deliberated on the decision when hearing arguments for United States v. Zacky Rahimi, and even some conservative judges seemed inclined to keep abusers from owning guns.
The case marks the Supreme Court’s first gun-related case since a 2022 ruling that expanded gun rights—by declaring gun legislation must align with 1700s laws to be considered constitutional.
Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that the government can disarm those deemed dangerous and protect victims of domestic abuse without violating constitutional rights.
A decision is expected by the end of June next year.
