Rapper Tory Lanez received a 10-year prison sentence yesterday for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020 after they left a party at celebrity Kylie Jenner’s home.
Lanez was convicted of three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, illegal possession of a firearm in a vehicle and negligent discharge of a gun. The Canadian citizen may face deportation from the US after he serves his sentence. In December, the singer was found guilty by a jury.
27-year-old Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion faced backlash for speaking out about the shooting. The trial brought up issues like the reluctance of Black victims to speak to the police, gender politics in hip-hop and online toxicity.
