Children who started using smartphones earlier reported more suicidal thoughts, sleep problems, low self-worth, and emotional struggles
New research warns parents against letting children under 13 use smartphones or social media, as it may harm their mental health.
A global survey of nearly 2 million people in 163 countries links early smartphone use to serious mental health issues like suicidal thoughts, sleep problems, low self-worth, and emotional struggles—especially in girls.
The study, published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, found that for every year a child before age 13 receives a smartphone, their well-being drops.
It is partly because early users spend more time on social media, experience cyberbullying, and struggle with family relationships.
What can parents do
Experts suggest delaying smartphone use until at least 13 and social media accounts until 16.
Parents are encouraged to team up with others, set shared limits, or switch to simpler phones.
Even if your child already has a device, it's not too late to make healthy changes to protect their mental well-being.
