The Teamsters union launched what it claims is its largest strike against Amazon yesterday. Nearly 10,000 workers joined picket lines at seven warehouses of the online retail giant.

The number is a small fraction of the 1.5 million people employed by the $2 trillion company.

According to the union, the online retailer and tech giant “ignored” a December 15 deadline it had set for contract negotiations.

Teamsters says the strike, which comes just a week before Christmas, would delay last-minute holiday shipping.

But Amazon claims the picketing by Teamsters won’t disrupt operations.

The sticking point between Amazon and the union
The online store claims that delivery drivers are contracted by a third-party business and, therefore, aren’t its employees. Teamsters says that since the company decides their working conditions, they are eligible to bargain.

Amazon has not recognized the union, accusing it of illegal and coercive tactics.
