In a surprising shift, 37% of Gen Z college graduates are now working in or pursuing skilled trades, according to a Resume Builder survey.

Among degree-holders, 46% of men and 27% of women favor trades.

Once viewed as backup options, trades such as plumbing, electrical work, and HVAC are attracting educated young adults who seek job security, better pay, and freedom from student debt.

Why the switch in Gen Z?
Rising demand plays a major role—US manufacturing alone may face a 1.9 million worker shortfall by 2033.

Trades also offer a strong return on investment, with many roles paying between $60,000 and $80,000 annually. Importantly, these hands-on careers are less likely to be replaced by AI, a growing concern among Gen Z.

What skilled trades offer
Today’s graduates want purposeful work and visible results, and trades deliver just that. Apprenticeships offer paid training, quicker job entry, and long-term growth—without the burden of student loans or lengthy job hunts.

For employers, the job trend offers a rare chance to fill critical gaps. Companies have to modernize recruitment and support career development for degree holders ready for blue-collar jobs.
