Nearly 10,000 federal workers were fired this week as Elon Musk-led DOGE looks to cut costs. The layoffs primarily targeted probationary employees, who are in their first year on the job and have fewer employment protections.

Agencies affected include the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Forest Service.

The Trump administration’s move came a day after it went ahead with its federal buyout program, which 75,000+ workers (out of 2.3 million) agreed to.

More agencies are on the chopping block, according to Reuters. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is preparing for thousands of job cuts next week, potentially disrupting tax season.
