New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted following a federal corruption probe, making him the first sitting NYC mayor to face criminal charges, reports The New York Times.
The indictment remains sealed, and his specific charges are unclear.
The investigation, which began in 2021, focuses on allegations that Adams and his campaign conspired with the Turkish government to receive illegal foreign donations and approve consulate projects despite construction safety concerns.
The probe has targeted the Adams administration for nearly a year, with searches conducted at the homes of several close associates, including his chief fundraiser. Authorities also recently seized Adams’ phone.
In response, the NYC Mayor has declared his innocence and vowed to remain in office. Public advocate Jumaane Williams would assume the role if Adams is forced to step down.
